Feed efficiency of pregnant Nellore cows and potential of body tissues development of their progenies

Abstract

The phenotypic evaluation of feed efficiency variation in beef cows is essential to increase the knowledge about the impact of more efficient animals use on beef productivity. The present project will be developed with the objective of identifying and quantifying the phenotypic variation of feed efficiency traits in pregnant Nellore cows in order to elucidate the effect of the residual feed intake class to which they belong in the production traits of their calf crops. Sixty Nellore heifers will be evaluated during the first and second pregnancy (until weaning of the second calf), to determine the associations between feed efficiency and skeletal size, body composition (obtained by ultrasonography), calf growth until weaning, and endocrine, energy, protein and mineral metabolism analysing metabolic indicators. The results generated with the development of the project will be important to promote the evaluation, selection and use of animals with higher feed efficiency for meat production. (AU)
