Abstract
To examine the health care costs associated with participation in organized sports among adolescents and identify the costs attributed to adverse events related to sport participation. Methods: Cohort study. The data collection will take place over one calendar year, which involves 233 adolescents of both sexes (11-16 years) in two periods of data collection (baseline measurements and at 12-month follow-up). However, contact with participants to collect information about health care costs will happen monthly. Data on potential confounders will cover gender chronological age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, fat free mass, bone mineral density, previous time engaged in sports participation and prior occurrence of bone fractures, alcohol consumption and smoking will be reported by the participant during face-ta-face interviews. Data will be collected on organized sports participation (e.g. previous time of engagement, weekly amount, effort perception, presence of physical impact). The calculation of health care costs will constitute a product of health service use and unit price. Information on the use of health care services will be reported by parents are guardians of adolescents through a questionnaire. Expected results: It is expected to identify possible cost savings related to sport practice in pediatric groups (compared to physically inactive ones), but also to estimate costs attributed to adverse events related to sport practice in adolescents.
