Application of experimental solidification techniques, characterization of microstructure and properties in the evaluation of eutectic and hypereutectic Al-base and Zn-base alloys

Abstract

This research project is based on the application of various solidification techniques so that a large spectrum of cooling conditions could be generated from a certain molten alloy. The main purpose is to produce and examine a variety of microstructures for each metallic alloy and to determine properties of interest following processing characteristics. Understanding the microstructure evolution in multicomponent alloys and the corresponding processing conditions is critical to developing a knowledgebase for their efficient and effective utilization in industrial applications. Most of the alloys of interest in the present research, such as hypereutectic Al-15Si-xMg alloys and ultrafine Al-22Cu-6Si and Al-26Cu-6Si eutectics, have aroused interest for engineering applications. Previous investigations denote that the addition of Mg can not only suppress the formation of primary Si but also improve the alloy wear resistance. The ultrafine eutectic can provide a remarkable combination of plasticity and strength, which depends on the generated microstructure. Optimization techniques through solidification can be applied in order to preprogram a certain manufacturing process so that both microstructures and properties could be managed. Another application referring to the present proposal is about brazing techniques of Al-11Si-X alloys and Zn-Al eutectics. Both alloys are typically employed as filler metals. The cooling conditions of the proposed alloys encompass relatively high cooling rates under transient regime. Certain applications may require high mechanical resistance while other conditions in service require enough wear resistance. Beyond complete characterization of the length-scale of the microstructures, morphologies and identification of intermetallic particles, wear, tensile and hardness tests will be carried out. Wetting angles will be determined in the case of the Zn-20Sn(-2Ag,-2Cu) and Zn-5%Al alloys in contact with metallic substrates. (AU)
