Technological update of minimally invasive surgery equipment using Fapesp Institutional Research Fund.

Abstract

Women's Hospital Professor José Aristodemo Pinotti (Caism) is a highly specialized teaching, research and assistance center in Gynecology, Obstetrics, Neonatology and Breast-Gynecological Oncology areas. The Gyncology and Obstetrics Graduate Program, which operates at Caism, has a Maximum Score at CAPES at Medicine III area, which certifies the international level of the research promoted in the institution.Every year, more than 160 graduate students work at the Hospital, mostly PhD students (55%). One of the main productivity indicators of the Program is the high number of publications in international journals. In 2015, there were 107 international publications and 13 national publications. In addition, it was published a book, 69 abstracts for international congresses and 8 book chapters. The strong integration between teaching, research and assistance is one of the main engines of scientific production at Caism: all hospital services are inserted in lines and research projects, many of them involving cases with rare population incidence and, therefore, they depend on new investigations to be elucidated. Among the topics with the highest scientific production are included: endometriosis, climacteric, oncological pathologies in women and high-risk obstetrics. The offer of treatment to those pathologies often require surgeries, which are always linked to the activities of teaching and research. On average, Caism performs more than 4,000 gynecological, oncological and obstetric surgeries per year. Laparoscopic surgical techniques have been used in many of these cases, with the advantage of providing a more accurate diagnostic approach and a minimally invasive therapy. To promote the production of research in the area, Caism intends to update its videolaparoscopy instruments. The hospital prepared the present project to make feasible the use of Fapes' technical reserve resources, in the amount of R $ 180,000.00, which will allow the acquisition of 41 new instruments. Through this investment, Caism will be strengthened as a center of international excellence in the development of research in the area of Medicine III. (AU)
