Abstract

Renal transplantation is the most effective therapy for end-stage renal disease. Brazil ranks second in absolute numbers of kidney transplants in the world, having carried out, in 2016, 5,492 kidney transplants.The need for lifelong use of immunosuppressive drugs associated with variety of comorbidities makes renal transplant recipients a unique group of patients with complex long-term oral health care needs. While advances in immunosuppressive drug regimens have decreased the risk of organ rejection, herpesvirus infections remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality for a majority of transplant recipients.The literature presents several articles focusing on the type and frequency of oral manifestations in renal transplant recipients, but it is scarce in research that provides scientific evidence on the risk of invasive dental treatment inducing local or distant infection in these immunosuppressed individuals. Another interesting area is the use of salivary- based diagnostics for herpesvirus detection and monitoring.In this context, the objectives of this project include: 1) to detect and quantify herpesviruses (HSV-1, HSV-2, EBV, CMV, VZV, HHV-6, HHV-7 and HHV-8) in oral fluids of kidney transplanted individuals in three moments being one immediately before and two after the transplant; 2) to evaluate the post-exodontic alveolar repair of renal transplant recipients.
