Right now: new views on Brazilian poetry in the 1970's

Abstract

The book presents and discusses major aspects in the work of thirteen Brazilian poets, with a special highlight to their individual production around the 1970´s. Before, though, the first study seeks to contextualize their itineraries and to depict the various artistic and ideological strands that made up the cultural ambience at the time, in order to look for confluences and confrontations. After this overview, there come twelve studies that take an in-depth review of part of the work by the following poets: José Paulo Paes, Haroldo de Campos, Augusto de Campos, Sebastião Uchoa Leite and Jorge Wanderley, Roberto Piva, Armando Freitas Filho, WalySalomão, Paulo Leminski, Duda Machado, Cacaso (Antonio Carlos de Brito), Afonso Henriques Neto, Ana Cristina Cesar. The purpose is to open a range of dialogues between the poetic currents that affected and fought each other over time, distinguishing their specificities as well as their contradictions, which are still present even today. These essays stem from studies on the level of Master and Doctoral degree and Professorship title by the collaborators who over the last years were members of a research group in which they managed to interchange viewpoints, even if everyone has resorted to different theoretical frameworks. Such interaction provided the researchers with mutual learning, leading them to a more comprehensive and nuanced reflection. The comparative approach to the other arts, as well as the correspondence with the social and historical issues that permeate and inform the work of these poets in a period so crucial for the making of a contemporary Brazil, allows us to assume the interest of a target public that includes both students and professors of literature as well as every reader that intends to get to know and better understand important authors situated after the high modernism, whose itinerary continues to be tread today. The title, Neste instante: novos olhares sobre a poesia brasileira dos anos 1970 (Right now: new views on Brazilian poetry in the 1970´s), intends to stress the temporal perspective and some originality in the work, locating today the angle of the critical view of our studies. In the end of the book, one can find the summarized curricula of participants in the edition. For this reason, we will just mention each one of them: the editors are professor Viviana Bosi (USP) and PhD student Renan Nuernberger (PPG TLLC-USP). Among participants, we call attention to professors Roberto Zular (USP), Leonardo Gandolfi (Unifesp), Annita Costa Malufe (PUC-SP), Sérgio Bento (UFU). All the other collaborators are graduate students or have just got a graduate degree in Literary Theory and Comparative Literatureat the University of São Paulo (USP): Lucius Provase (PhD), Fabio Weintraub (PD and a post-doctoral fellow in Brazilian Literature-USP), Andréa Catrópa da Silva (PhD), Fabricio Clemente (M.A, PhD student at UFG), Paulo Ferraz (M.A.), Carlos Martin (PhD and a post-doctoral fellow in Brazilian Literature-USP), André Goldfeder (PhD student). We hope the book will continue the fruitful dialogue we have had over the years, which will certainly lure new participants. (AU)
