Abstract

Biodiesel is considered a viable alternative to the use of diesel, since it presents some advantages over the fossil fuel. Biodiesel could be obtained from vegetable oils or animal fats, being a renewable and biodegradable fuel. Recently, studies about biodiesel synthesis in microreactors have been performed, however, few investigation were aimed to the development of micro-chemical plants in order to produce biodiesel in commercial scale. Micro-chemical plants could be defined as chemical plants using micrometric structures, mainly constituted by microreactors, micromixers and micro heat-exchangers. The micro-chemical plant development is divided in steps of microreactor design, distributors design and implementation, microreactors stand structure design and micro-chemical plant instrumentation and control. In this context, the present research project intends to develop a micro-chemical plant to produce biodiesel in commercial scale applying computational tools and prototyping techniques. The micro-chemical plant development will consist of internal numbering-up of a microreactor to increase flow rate capacity, flow rate distributor design in N sub-streams, microreactors stand structure design, and lastly, the micro-chemical plant instrumentation, control and implementation. The present research aims to contribute with new and economically viable technologies to reduce the use of petroleum oil by the biodiesel production and the knowledge advance of chemical processes in microscale.
