Investigation of feasibility to use computer aided texture analysis for detection and classification of ameloblastomas and keratocysts

Abstract

Imaging assessments have become a fundamental part of biomedical sciences, not only for diagnosis, but also for planning, treatment and follow-up in health sciences. The development of digital image analysis technologies has made possible to increase the sensitivity and specificity of these investigations. Texture analysis is one of them. Through this analysis it is possible to describe, by means of statistical parameters, if there are differences between tissues of different examined regions, as well as between healthy tissues and affected by pathologies, in the same region, having the ability to detect image patterns that are normally imperceptible to human vision.Ameloblastoma and keratocystic are benign odontogenic lesions that develop from epithelial remains of structures involved in dental development. The differential diagnosis between these two lesions and their clinical/pathological subtypes remains a challenge due to their morphological similarities, which hinder differentiation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of imaging exams for the analysis of both lesions.This project aims to investigate whether texture analysis of MR images can add important information on the differentiation of different types of ameloblastomas and keratocysts. For this, patients with both lesions will be selected. We will perform the image textural analysis with the Matlab software, selecting suitable textural analysis parameters and verifying their validity in imaging and histopathological diagnosis and molecular profile of ameloblastomas, regarding the BRAF V600E mutation and a non-coding RNAs panel (by deep sequencing analysis). We will correlate the image changes with the progression of the clinical, histopathological, molecular and morphometric parameters. Subsequently, it will be evaluated if these texture parameters are able to predict if the lesion is in agreement with the final histological diagnosis and molecular profile. (AU)
