The present project aims to use waste generated in the automobilist industry for the formulation of materials that can be used in the manufacture of orthoses or orthopedic immobilizers. The waste used will be trimmings from the manufacture of windshields and also discarded and recycled windshields. Evaluations of the viability of the residues for blends and composites formulations will be carried out at this stage of the research. This project consists of analyzing the collection, processing, thermal stability of the residues and its incorporation into polymeric formulations. The mechanical and thermomechanical performance will be tested for each proposed formulation. The compound with the best properties will be submitted to an evaluative study with patients and professionals of the area. The success of this project will generate a higher value-added product than the existing products that use such waste, like carpets and hoses. The product, being produced with low cost material, will have a highly competitive value with similar products currently used in Brazil, all of which are imported. In addition, the proposed product may be a substitute for plaster of Paris used for orthopedic purposes. (AU)
