Abstract

Taurine supplementation researches has increased due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions, and its ability to modulate lipid metabolism by stimulating the expression of proteins that regulates mitochondrial biogenesis and increases respiratory function (PGC-1± and PPAR). Since obesity can induce metabolic disorders including abnormal production of adipokines and activation of pro-inflammatory signaling pathways also mitochondrial metabolism dysfunction in the adipose tissue, the use of taurine would be a new strategy for obesity prevention and treatment. Moreover, the association of taurine and exercise could improve exercise effects, promote higher energy expenditure and increase mitochondrial respiration, consequently resulting in weight loss. Methods: 45 obese women will be recruited for this study. The study will consist of 8-week supplementation period with taurine (3 grams) or placebo associated or not with exercise. In order to check the effects of the intervention, abdominal tissue biopsy will be performed for histological adipose tissue analysis, evaluation of mitochondrial function and quantification of uncoupling proteins (UPCs 1 and 2), PGC 1 ± and PPAR; blood collection will be done for quantification of taurine and of inflammatory markers (IL-10, IL-6, IL-1, TNF-± and CRP) and evaluation of telomeric length before and after the supplementation period. And body composition will be evaluated by deuterium oxide method. Outcomes: It is expected that taurine supplementation associated with exercise will increase mitochondrial function of the white adipose tissue, increase energy expenditure, decrease weight and body fat mass, and benefit the inflammatory profile of obese women.
