Plan for the application of RTI-FAPESP resources of 2017 at the Center for Biological and Health Sciences of the Federal University of São Carlos

Abstract

The CoC / CCBS, considering the specificities of the Areas (Biological and Health) that make up the academic, research and extension structure of CCBS / UFSCar, following the guidelines of FAPESP, guided the application of RTI-FAPESP resources from the diagnosis of the current situation, in which the necessary actions were established to overcome the identified difficulties and to improve CCBS's collective research infrastructure. The CCBS is a very heterogeneous Center, composed to two different areas of knowledge - Biological and Health. The initial diagnosis was based on three main pillars: 1) Common infrastructure: used to support research by all CCBS members. At present, this universe comprises the Central Biotério and the infrastructure of the CCBS building, in particular, the seminar rooms used to scientific meetings of the CCBS research groups and support for the holding of events. 2) Biological area infrastructure: laboratories that develop research directly linked to the biological area, such as biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology, among others. It is important to emphasize that several health studies also involve studies of the basic area. 3) Health area infrastructure: laboratories that conduct research in the health area, particularly involving humans. From these three pillars it was possible to identify three collective demands for service. Each one of them will allow the multiple attendance to different researchers, once they have been prioritized demands of multiuser character, namely: 1) Common infrastructure: improvement of the quality of the animals produced by the Central Animal House and technical extension of the CCBS videoconference system. 2) Biological Area Infrastructure: CCBS was recently approved with the proposal "UFSCAR-SEQ - UFSCar-Seq: A Facility for Large-Scale Sequencing and Analysis of DNA and RNA Sequences from UFSCar", on the call MCTI / FINEP / CT-INFRA - PROINFRA - 02/2014 - Multiuser Equipment, with the investiment of R$ 1,492,720.80. The implementation of this proposal also requires investment in research infrastructure in Molecular Biology and we are investing part of our resourses on this infrastructure. Also, a Cell Culture for the manipulation of pathogenic organisms characterized as Biosafety Level 2 (BSL2) is a necessity for several lines of research that make use of these microorganisms in the Departments of this Center in ongoing Regular Projects from FAPESP. In addition, the demand for liquid nitrogen comprises a common need of researchers conducting studies in the basic / biological area. 3) Health area infrastructure: the research infrastructure associated with the development of clinical research in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Gerontology was also prioritized in this proposal, in view of the growing number of researches carried out in these areas, as well as the multiuser character of research laboratories attended.
