Abstract

This Project deals with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Hydrodynamic Stability applied to offshore engineering and its focus is the vortex-induced vibrations in the flow around bluff bodies. The CFD part of this project consists in the implementation of a code based on the Spectral Element Method (SEM) to simulate the flow around two cylinders in tandem, in which the upstream body is fixed and the downstream is mounted on a elastic base being free to oscillate in the transverse direction. With this, we hope to have a better understand of the interference phenomena involving this arrangement for a Reynolds range between 200 and 320. The Hydrodynamic Stability part is based in the so-called Ginzburg-Landau equation, which is obtained as an asymptotic solution of the 3D (discrete) Navier-Stokes equation and, in practice, consists of a numerical research about the first instable mode of the 2D discrete Navier-Stokes equation around its steady-solution in the vicinity of the Hopf bifurcation (Re; Recr) and its generalization in the third direction (considering only weak tree-dimensionality).
