Abstract

Cerebral blood circulation has special characteristics responsible for controlling the relation between functional activity, metabolism and blood flow in the nervous tissue. An important characteristic is the cerebral vasoregulation, responsible for keeping the blood flow constant or for changing it in response to functional necessities. Patients with cerebrovascular diseases, such as carotid stenosis, show a cerebral vasoregulation deficit that can cause cerebral ischemic events. Then, since it has relevance in daily clinical routine, we want to assess the vasoreactivity and the cerebral vascular reserve in patients with severe carotid stenosis or unilateral carotid occlusion, and correlate the changes with collateral patterns, to be evaluated by resonance angiography and transcranial Doppler sonography. To assess the cerebrovascular reserve, we will use fMRI technique and look for specific characteristics of the hemodynamic response function and its changes after vasodilatatory stimuli by inhalation of CO2.
