RANKL and osteoprotegerin expression in gingival fluid and tissue in different peri-implantitis severity before and after anti-infection therapy: a study in human beings

Abstract

This study will evaluate the “receptor activator of NF-{kappa}B ligand" (RANKL) e osteoprotegerin (OPG) expression in different forms of perimplantitis before and after mechanic anti- infection therapy. Forty dental implants will be divided in four groups: Group 1: mucositis; Group 2: light to moderate perimplantitis; Group 3: severe perimplantitis; Group 4: health perimplant tissue. It will be only included implants with indication for surgical procedures (groups 2 and 3: surgical access flap/ groups 1 and 4: gingival hyperplasia). RANKL and OPG gene and protein expressions will be analyzed by quantitative PCR and ELISA test respectively. Gingival biopsies will be colleted and mRNA levels analyzed by quantitative PCR. Crevicular fluid will be collected at the beginning of the study and 90 days after treatments for ELISA test. Intergroup analysis will be done by ANOVA and intragroup analysis by Repeated Measures ANOVA (alpha= 0.05) for ELISA results. “Real Time” PCR data will be evaluated by one way ANOVA (alpha= 0.05).
