Abstract

Introduction and justification: Many risk factors are associated to the presence of dengue fever and its vector Aedes aegypti. The identification of these factors allows the control activities to be stratified according to premises and containers aiming to decrease the risk of dengue occurrence in the municipality. Objective: To identify risk factors for the infestation by Aedes aegypti pupae in premises and the types of containers with the highest productivity. Material and Methods: The urban area of São José do Rio Preto was previously divided in 14 Vector Control Regions by the Hygiene and Health Secretary where a sample of 6600 premises will be selected among the most infested vector control regions for the study. The measure of immature form density of the vector will be performed from December 2006 to March 2007 for the attainment of entomological indicators associated to larvae and pupae. All larvae and pupae in the containers will be collected and identified. A questionnaire to collect information about the residents will be applied at the same period of the immature form evaluation and at the same sample of premises. The values of variables concerning the premises and its residents will be measured in all involved premises to identify, by logistic regression, the ones that can be considered a risk for the presence of pupae at residences. The containers will be classified according type and environment of premises, considering the productivity of pupae. A new measure of immature form density will be performed in the same area from December 2007 to March 2008 to verify the stability of the pupae productivity. The premises with identified risk factors will be considered key. A stratification proposal will be elaborated from the identification of key premises and key containers and presented to Hygiene and Health Secretary, aiming to have it adopted by the municipality.
