Abstract

This project aims to start a discussion about the pictorial images of Sappho in France of the XIX century. This greek poet of the Arcaic Period could show us, so privileged, the representations that a certain historical period does about the Classical Antiquity, the women, the sexuality, and particularly, what at the time began to be called "lesbianism". For this it's considered that practices - while images exposed to a particular audience - are produced by representations. The three selected images seem to be bound the famous letter XV of Ovídio, included in the book Heroides, and published between 20 and 16 BC, in which the poet gives voice to Sappho. The France knew the poem since the humanist period. By confronting these imagens with the latin representations seeks to understand relationships between pictorial signs and the reasons of the thematical choice. The images, legitimised by a simbolic body recognizable in the France, are produced by representations, have links in other discourses and they look for power between myriad of images that there.
