Abstract The "Cratylus" raises significant problems of interpretation and has become an eminent object of academic study in recent years. There exists an interesting gap in modern readings of the "Cratylus" when compared to the Antient ones (especially the commentary by Proclus). If neo-platonic commentators understand the dialogue as central to Platonism, Analytic philosophers of recent years tend to regard it as of marginal importance and tend to emphasize its epistemology. In my thesis I try to downplay more recent interpretations and reconstruct what is interesting in the Antient readings in modern terms. The "Cratylus" presents a metaphysical notion of "name" which touches on little regarded aspects of Platonism. (AU) | |
