Abstract

This research puts the focus on Antonio Bento de Araujo Lima's criticism. Writer, Art Critic and Journalist he was born in Araruna, Paraiba on October, 5th, 1902 and lived in Rio de Janeiro since the 1920 decade up to his death, in 1988.The study of Antonio Bento´s contribution from 1930 to 1960 is the aim of this project.His first critical contribution was a chronicle published in the newspaper "A Republica de Natal", and focused the artist Ismael Nery, approaching him to the Modernist Movement in the 1920's, and to the debate about modernist and academic art.In 1961, during VI Bienal de São Paulo Antonio Bento is the president of the II International Congress of Art Critics, where the central debate was on the Issues of contemporary art (December. 1961) - The Biennial is then considered as the main international event in Brazil.
