Abstract

Species of the bryozoan genus Scrupocellaria are ecologically and economically important particularly because they are typically fouling species, some of them being potentially invasive. Yet this genus has not been comprehensively studied using tools like scanning electron microscopy. A systematic revision is needed in order to provide consistent and reliable identification of taxa. The principal objectives of this proposal are to: 1) evaluate the morphological characters that have been traditionally used in the taxonomy of the genus and propose new characters to critically define species, 2) compare all the species of the genus, reviewing and redescribing the ones reported to the Atlantic, 3) undertake a survey of the species of Scrupocellaria along the Brazilian coast, describing new taxa and analyzing their geographical distribution, 4) create a taxonomic key based on morphological characters for the identification of the species of Scrupocellaria from the Atlantic. This study will be based on specimens available on preserved collections (official museums and other scientific institutions) and on new specimens collected in several locations along the Brazilian coast during project execution. This project is supported by several people from many institutions who will help on the field trips and on establishing new museum collections of bryozoans in Brazil. (AU)
