Abstract

The present project of inquiry negotiates of the period setecentista in Portuguese America and establishes like primordial fountains the paintings of portrait of the real Portuguese family - Dynasty of Bragança - in which they imagine the members of the ruling house. Integrated to the internal and extern criticism of these effigies that survived up to the present, there would happen the examination of the documents that make reference to the paintings, as well as, the theoretical texts that were produced contemporarily or in periods previous to them. The appreciation of these visual and documentary fountains, associated to the historiography concerning the subject would make possible an accurate examination of the symbolic universe of the time. Being the painting of portrait arrange which search to provide to a viewer a representation of the portrayed one, that one can aim at the transmission of the physical aspect of the individual, but also it can aim to reach other levels of information. Depending on the context of his production, the works have countless values and meanings attributed to the represented figure. In case of the paintings under analysis, the figures of the characters of the real family, they have multiple interpretations and when were transplanted for Portuguese America the means of reading and inferences they are transformed.
