Abstract

This proposal contributes to the recognition of Brazilian Modern Architecture diffusion/dissemination, and so the urban landscape transformation, taking as a starting point the changes introduced on conception, production and assimilation of a new residential design (houses and apartment buildings), therefore the ideals of modernity and the modernistic speeches and practices from the middle of 20th Century.The analysis will be focused on the residential production in João Pessoa, capital of Paraíba, between the 1950s and 1970s decades. The ideas of modernization and modernity were published by local journals which defended projects of urban transformations, in whose speeches were clearly the discomfort with the past marks. This defense reassured the construction of new buildings with "modern lines" and adoption of the current symbols of modernity, articulating public politics and private initiative.In this target, four axles of investigation are considered: a) the relation between some involved agents (ideological, professional, social, economic and cultural) in the conception of the "modern house" spaces; b) the intensity of national architecture references in the process of a new conception and dissemination of the modern living program; c) the evaluation of the private initiative role in the assimilation of the modern architecture proposals and its introduction in João Pessoa's urban scene; d) the reach of modern ideals incorporation by the dominant and intellectual elite and also the common citizens.
