Abstract

This project intends to extend the research on "Between the locomotive and the faithful of the balance: the transition from labor in the South of Minas Gerais (1870-1902)", developed to obtain the title of Master at the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora - UFJF- between 2007 and 2008. This work aims to understand the discourse of the elite on the transition from slave labor to free labor of the most dynamic regions of Minas Gerais and the local newspapers were main source research. By the way, these newspapers were analyzed from different political factions, conservatives, liberals and republicans, who have different positions front to change the world of work, emancipation, abolitionists, immigrants etc. So, we see how the elite owner varied between the different projects to solve the crisis of labor in the region. However, with research in newspapers and with extensive documentation on the publishers and owners of journals in our hands, we formulate new questions that await answers. The crisis of the monarchist regime was accompanied by the arising and expansion of the republican movement in the end of the nineteenth century. During the period, the press was institutional stage of discussions, and strongly influenced the local politics. In the studies of the doctoral level degree, we want to recover the models and conflicts that circulated in South of Minas Gerais'newspapers around the transition from monarchy to a republican regime, to better understanding the settings that occasion the production and dissemination of this new political regime. With this scope, we'll develop a prosopography of the South of Minas Gerais' newspaper writers. The collective biography will allow the understanding of the diverse political positions that influence the location that republicanism, in its dominant side, it was closely tied to the project of "conservative modernization" of the elite holding economic and political capital that enabled them to remain in control of state after the Proclamation of the Republic, with the promotion of urban development and the desire to experience the benefits of modernity that was announced.
