Rice oil in the feeding of weanling pigs

Abstract

Weaning is considered a critical period to piglets due nutritional, immunological, social and environmental challenges. A recent research showed positive results about rice oil's nutritional value to the feeding of weanling piglets. Two experiments will be executed to evaluate rice oil's digestibility and the effects of rice oil inclusion in the diet of weanling pigs on performance, organs morphometry and intestinal morphology. In Experiment 1, three tratments will be tested: T1 - reference diet (RD); T2 - 90% RD + 10,0% Rice Oil; T3 - 90% RD + 10,0% Soybean Oil. For this, 48 swine will be used, barrows, and the adopted method will be the partial faeces collection, with the addition of chromic oxide, to the determination of digestibility. Experimental design will consist in a randomized block design, with three treatments, eight replications and two animals per experimental unit. In Experiment 2, 120 weaning pigs will be used, both sexes, to analyse performance, organs morphometry and histology of intestinal epithelium. Treatments will consist on different levels of soybean oil (SO) substitution for rice oil (RO): T1 - 4,0% of SO; T2 - 3,0% of SO and 1,0% of RO; T3 - 2,0% of SO and 2,0% of RO; T4 - 1,0% of SO and 3,0% of RO; T5 - 4,0% of RO. Experimental design adopted will be a randomized block design, with five treatments, eight replications and three animals per experimental unit.
