Abstract

In this project, the numerical and experimental study of the impact phenomena on Fiber-Metal Laminates (FML) plates is going to be developed. The innovative material, developed by University of Liverpool, will be characterized at wide range of strain rates. For this, an Instron Universal Testing Machine will be used for the mechanical characterization at low strain rates; a split pressure Hopkinson bar, for high strain rates, and an equipment will be developed for the FML characterization at medium strain rates. The high-speed impact of metallic spheres is going to be developed against FML plates, using a gas-gun, aiming to define its ballistic limit. These experimental tests will be simulated using commercial finite elements software. Thus, a material model and failure criteria will be defined, able to represent the material dynamic behavior. The experimental tests will be compared to the numerical results. (AU)
