Abstract

This project has as its main goal understanding the reception of Anton Pavlovitch Chekhov's (1860-1904) theater in Brazil, during the period between 40th and 2010. Having in mind the late modernization of our theater (PRADO, 1993) and the late transformations of our fiction - that were consolidated only with the Modernist Week of 22 (BOSI, 1975) - we intend to survey the theatrical stagings of Chekhov's plays produced in Brazil, trying to understand in what extent the chekhovian innovative poetics were part of the modernization of the Brazilian theater and to what extent they were incorporated into the theatrical critique and debate, leading us to contemporary interpretations of his work. Also, we will catalog the Brazilian translations and editions of Chekhov`s work, aiming at an initial comprehension of the editorial preferences and the critical demarcations about his work. (AU)
