Abstract

Sponges are important components in many marine benthic communities. They are sessile organisms and have a skeletal system that consists of microscopic inorganic elements (spicules), collagen fibers and/or combinations of these components. Although without obvious physical protections such as shells or spines, are only occasionally predated, being the starfishes one of its main consumers. This may be due to the production of metabolic compounds and the presence of their skeletal elements. Only recently the deterrent effect of this last kind of defense was experimentally demonstrated, but its relative importance is still under debate. To understand the roles of the skeleton in the sponge defense is necessary to know the details of the digestive process of the predator on its prey. Therefore, this project aims to examine aspects of the physiology and feeding behavior in the sponge-echinoderm relation, using the starfish Echinaster brasiliensis as a model. Field and in vitro observations will be made to determine the consumption strategy used by the sea star. The digestive process of the skeletal material (spicules and/or fibers) will be monitored to its elimination, verifying the occurrence of tissue damage and the mechanism used by the organism to deal with the ingested components. Additionally, the ability to digest organic compound from sponges will be determined for E. brasiliensis.
