Abstract

The present research project intends to investigate relations, differences and tensions between the proposals of Friedrich Nietzsche and Antonin Artaud, present in the works The Birth of Tragedy and The Theater and its Double. It will be focused specially on the concepts of Apollonian and Dionysian and the Theater of Cruelty, in order to reflect upon the critics that these authors assemble about the art of their age, demonstrating also the differentiated strategies that they make use of to approximate art and life. The way each one appropriates archaic references to rethink the modern western theater is also a relevant subject of the research. For that, a thorough reading of these works will be accomplished, supported by commentators. The theoretical study of these concepts is justified by the fact that allows questionings surrounding today's theater. Keywords: Apollonian. Cruelty. Dionysian. Tragic.
