Abstract

Infection by phytopathogens elicits changes in plant phenotype which can affect insect vector interactions. Several studies show that insect vector behavior is determinant in virus transmission and spreading. Nevertheless, great part of these studies is related to insect vector from Sternorrhyncha suborder and little is known about beetle-transmitted viruses. In USA, Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV) is mainly transmitted by Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) which has been caused considerable direct and indirect damage to soybean crops in the last years. Thus, the current project aim at answering the following questions: (1) Does C. trifurcata behavior favor virus spreading?; (2) How does the interaction between the resistance metabolic pathways of JA (jasmonic acid) and SA (salicylic acid) induced by BPMV infection and C. trifurcata attack occur?; and (3) C. trifurcata behavior towards soybean-mosaic-virus -infected plants favors the infection by BPMV, which acts synergistically? In order to that, behavioral and biological assays will be perform and induced resistance mechanisms of pathogen-infected and herbivore-attacked plants will be determined. The project will reveal important information about the insect behavioral pattern which can favor pathogen transmission and spreading and therefore this knowledge is also helpful in insect vector management in the field.
