Abstract

The most richness anuran fauna is found in the American tropics and studies about the species biology have been increasing, mainly those related to reproduction, such as reproductive season, influence of abiotic factors in the reproductive season, habitat use, male vocalization activity and social interactions. Anuran male vocalization can be advantageous by repealing other males and attracting females, but also may be costly,by increasing energy expenditure and predation risks. Sexual selection can be divided into intra-sexual selection - usually involving male-male combats for females - and inter-sexual selection - usually involving male choice by females. In anurans, in general, females choose males by evaluating certain physical parameters of males' vocalizations. Studies with acoustic experimentation (playback) in the lab or in the field are important to understand the mechanisms and characteristics of the vocalizations related to the choice process. The present work aims to study the reproductive biology of Bokermannohyla ibitiguara in water streams in the municipality of Sacramento, state of Minas Gerais. This species is considered as "Data Deficient" (IUCN, 2010) and almost no data on its natural history is available. Field work will be carried out monthly from August 2010 to July 2011. Habitat use, temporal distribution, temporal reproductive pattern, courtship behavior, territoriality, reproductive mode, clutch characteristics, and reproductive investment will be described for this species. The different types of call and the social context of emissions will be described as well. Given that B. ibitiguara exhibits a call composed by primary and secondary notes, we will test the hypothesis that the first part has the function of advertisement call and the second part has the function of territorial call through playback experimentats in the field and by means of direct observations. We believe that results generated by this study will provide important data on the species biology, which might be very useful for conservation practices.
