Abstract

Environmental problems generated by CO2 increase in the atmosphere have received a great deal of attention from the international community. Biological strategies for CO2 mitigation have been proposed as an important mechanism for CO2 reduction. Microalgae are organisms that use CO2 through photosynthesis in order to produce organic materials that may be of industrial interests. Nevertheless, to have microalgae growing in large scale systems at economically viable rates, several difficulties related to the large cultures have to be overcome. Open raceway algal ponds are restrict to only few species, while closed photobioreactors are still in development stage. The introduction of procedures that minimize the cost of large scale cultures are of great interest and one of the factors that may reduce operation costs is the reuse culture media to grow microalgae. This research aims to investigate the effects of used culture medium on the gorwth and elementar composition of Scenedesmus quadricauda, a freshwater Chlorophyceae. (AU)
