Abstract

Aim: Aggressive periodontitis is frequently associated to several factors that try to explain its initiation and progression. A constant microbial colonization, an altered inflammatory host response and a clear genetic factor are cited as possible factors associated to this pathology. Thus, aggressive periodontitis subjects could transmit genetic polymorphisms as well as microbial associated to periodontal destruction to their descendents, increasing the risk of develops this disease. This way, this project is aimed in evaluate the transmission of periodontal pathogens within families of generalized aggressive periodontitis compared to families of oral health subjects. Methods: Thirty families will be selected and divided in two groups: Test group (n=15 families) families in which the parents (or at least one of them) present generalized aggressive periodontitis and a son aged to 6 to 12 years old; Control group (n=15 families) families in which the parents (both of them) present periodontal healthy and a son aged to 6 to 12 years old. The groups will be composed using a gender- and age-matched structure, in order to assure the similarity of these features. All individuals (parents and children) will be clinically assessed (plaque and bleeding indices, periodontal probing depth, clinical attachment level and gingival recession), and from each subject will be collected subgingival biofilm from periodontal pockets/sites and stimulated saliva. From subgingival biofilm and saliva, total DNA will be extracted and, using a real time PCR reaction, A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis and T. forsythia levels will be determined. Clinical and microbiological data from each group will be compared by Student's t test. Vertical transmission in each group also will be determined and the Odds ratio of infection's risk to each pathogen assessed.
