Abstract This research has as main object of analysis the work "De gli habiti antichi, et moderni di diuerse parti del mondo" (1590), of the Italian Cesare Vecellio (c.1521-1601). A second edition was published under the title "Habiti antichi et moderni di tutto il mondo" in 1598. This version featured its visual content expanded - despite the author's comments, which were reduced or simply omitted. The emergence of this genre of publication, called "costume books", occurred during the sixteenth century, along with the cartographic and encyclopedic interest. Thus, not only represent Vecellio western clothes, especially those used by Europeans, but also includes examples of costumes used by Asians, Africans, Americans and several other cultures that were present in the restless period of Venice (images of ancient people and costumes that were contemporary).It seeks to realize, therefore, how this work fits in the situation of other costume books of his time (showing the cultural context for their creation), and investigate the relationship between image and text in the various editions of the book and mainly propose the translation of its contents to a Portuguese version - unpublished and commented. To this end, the objective is to walk openly and to be ready to receive new influences and contribute to in theoretical discussions, so scarce in the Brazilian reality - without abandoning, however, the main scope.
