Abstract

Neutrophils are the first cells to migrate to infections site and they perform important role in the defense against several pathogens. The function of neutrophils involves phagocytosis and destruction of microrganisms through reactive oxygen species, antimicrobian enzymes and peptides; besides cytokines and chemokines production in order to attract and activate other defense cells. Neutrophils express membrane receptors for linking opsonized or not pathogens, and they are able to trigger intracellular activation cascades culminating in neutrophils effective response against infections. Receptors of the IgG class immunoglobulins (CD16, CD32 and CD64) execute fundamental role in the recognition of opsonized microrganisms, and they are expressed at different activation stages of neutrophils, according to the factors of the microenvironment, specially the cytokine/chemokine interleucin 8 (IL-8). Neutrophils present phenotypic and functional changes with the advance of the age. Such changes may directly affect their activation and survival, facilitating establishment and persistence of diseases. The aim of this work is to evaluate the pattern of IgG receptors expression on neutrophils and possible alterations related to the ageing. Therefore, we will analyze induced CD16, CD32 and CD64 expression, survival, enzymatic activity and cytokines production for neutrophils, obtained of elderly and young subjects, after in vitro stimulated by IL-8 and bacterial lipopolysaccharyde (LPS).
