Abstract

The proposed research project involves studies of catalytic activity and product distribution for the ethanol oxidation reaction on trimetallic Pt-based catalysts, varying their chemical composition and structure (PtM1M2 and PtM1/PtM2; M1 and M2 = Sn, Rh or Ru and M1 different of M2). The proposal involves a combination of two approaches: i) advanced synthesis methodologies which allow preparing the nanoparticles that constitute the catalysts with good control of composition and particle size (modified polyol method); ii) techniques for studying the catalytic activity which allow evaluating not only current responses but also determining the reaction products. Thus, this proposal includes studies of catalytic activity using conventional electrochemical techniques complemented with the use of high performance liquid chromatography for on-line quantification of reaction products formed under different experimental conditions. The proposed strategy aims to establish correlations between chemical and structural properties of trimetallic catalysts and their efficiencies to promote the complete conversion of ethanol to CO2 and H2O, as a way to contribute to the development of efficient materials for direct alcohol fuel cell anodes.
