Abstract

The zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis is one of the most important emerging parasitic diseases. According to data from Ministry of Health, there has been an increase of confirmed cases and deaths from 2000 to 2009. Parallel to this, the criterion currently used for the leishmaniasis control in Brazil has been based on the elimination of parasitized dogs, which has drawn criticism in ethical and epidemiological studies. Considering this scenery, this project presents as objective to elaborate an optimization model for leishmaniosis control, based on linear programming techniques (LP). To elaborate this model, we will use an adapted mathematical model from Burattini et al. (1998) as basis and five methods of control as decision variable: dog treatment; dog elimination; blocking transmission vaccine; insecticide collar; and vetor control. Besides the epidemiological optimization, it will also be analyzed the optimization under economical restrictions. In this case, we will add to the model the restrictions that represent the availability of resources for the activities of leishmaniasis control program. We expected that the obtained results and conclusions be useful as auxiliary tools for the public health institutions in general, as well as optimizing the planning of control activities. (AU)
