Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze how the idea or the concept of folklore and music, both popular and scholarly, it was appropriated by the cultural policy of the government of Getulio Vargas, based on the revised Political Culture - Regular monthly predominantly Brazilian studies , published in Rio de Janeiro and published in March 1941 to October 1945. Supported by the ideals of the New State Culture Policy was an initiative of the Department of Press and Propaganda (DIP), with the aim of forming a center of Brazilian studies focused on the definition and direction of diffusion of political and social changes desired for the country and, consequently, enhance a harmonious relationship between state and society. Importantly, the Estado had political discourse as a guiding national-popular: a strategic practice of appropriating elements of popular culture in the process of reconfiguration of national identity. This popular culture, identified in rural areas was taken as a common heritage, endangered by the advances of modernity. Many artists have established an outstanding relationship with the folk traditions, so the use of folk material for the composition of his works, in an attempt to define and consolidate a national identity.
