Abstract

The Aplacophora is considered a basal group in the phylogeny of Mollusca, whose species generally range from 1mm to 5cm, with some reaching up to 30cm long. There are still doubts about the phylogenetic relationships with other classes of mollusks, which is basically a debate over whether aplacophorans form a paraphyletic group or whether it is monophyletic. They are subdivided into Solenogastres (= Neomeniomorpha) and Caudofoveata (= Chaetodermomorpha). For the Brazilian coast the knowledge about these animals are very limited, partly due to the small size and because they live in deeper waters, inaccessible to researchers. This project aims to study the specimens of the family Chaetodermidae (Caudofoveata) collected by the HABITAT project, "Avaliação da Heterogeneidade Ambiental da Bacia de Campos", coordinated by CENPES / PETROBRAS. These were obtained at depths of 30 to 1953m on the continental shelf, slope and submarine canyons.Individuals were collected in the Campos Basin, Rio de Janeiro, composing a collection of 1174 specimens identified so far for this family. The morphotypes already separated will be studied by the scanning electron microscopy and by histological sections, checking the diagnostic features for each. Comparing these morphotypes with the species already described in the literature, they will be identified to genera and species, which deal with registering new records for Brazil and which are new species, unknown for our coastline.
