Abstract

The phonoaudiological evaluation in the intensive care unit is particularly indicated for patients with suspected dysphagia, and stroke, orotracheal intubation and prolonged tracheotomy its main risk factors.Swallowing problems are common, followed by the stroke. And breathing disorders are the most frequent causes of complications in stroke. The tracheotomy is a procedure for the treatment of respiratory failure. The weaning is a process whose beginning should never be postponed in view of the complications associated with mechanical ventilation and cost associated with this process. It is common to follow specific rules for your indication, but there are no rules for determining the withdrawal process - weaning. The tracheotomy alters the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system and its impact on the physiology of swallowing can be mechanical or functional. The most widespread methods for evaluation of swallowing are the clinical and functional tests and the instrumental examinations videofluoroscopy and fiberoptic endoscopy of swallowing. It is proposed then to reconcile the various instruments for assessment of swallowing so that we can incorporate into clinical practice and create protocols based on scientific evidence, characterizing the swallowing function of patients with stroke and, thereby, reducing risk to patients and to define better safer route of administrationof the diet in the process of decannulation.
