Abstract

Syngonanthus nitens (Bong.) Rhuland and Mauritia flexuosa Mart. are species used in the golden grass handicraft made by communities of the Jalapão region, in the State of Tocantins. The people that live in those communities accumulate empiric knowledge about those species for the diferent steps of the hadicraft, since the harvest, passing by the treatment of the biological material, until the braid itself. This project intend to survey such knowledge related to the golden grass and the buriti in two communities of the jalapão region: Povoado da Mumbuca e Comunidade do Prata. The data will be confronted with the scientific botanical knowledge about both species with the intention of verifying how much the local and scientific knowledges get close or far from one another. With that the debate related to the actions about the biodiversity s conservation and its relation with the environmental education for the locals could be enhanced. (AU)
