Abstract

This research aims at articulating both theory and practice in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Studies of the graduate program in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism in the University of São Paulo. As per the main goals, there is an urge of comprehending the possibilities of implementing an experimental landscape architecture action in the Jardim Celeste neighborhood, in Butantã zone, São Paulo, applying the participatory design with the local community and governmental institutions. Therefore, this is an action-research, where the planned interventions characterized by socio-environmental and educational grounds enable both researchers and participatory groups to build the means to make them apt to respond and act to the problems related to the place they live, pursuing truly life-changing actions. The researcher will reflect upon the process (action), contextualize and compare it with other similar processes, bearing in mind the constraints of traditional governmental institutions. To sum up, this research will look at the process of urbanization of Brazilian metropolitan areas and its devastation of public open spaces, study the problematic issues revolving around the environment and landscape of São Paulo, establishing partnerships between formal and informal institutions and, finally, devise methods for the analysis of the named case study area. Thus, it is believed that taking those measurements will enable this project to succeed along its way. (AU)
