Abstract

The proposed work aims to show the way the Portuguese state reacted to the sugar crisis of the between 1670-1695 . Show the causes of this crisis, its moment of greatest expression and the most affected by it, therefore, the analysis period extends from 1640 to 1695, as if to explain the crisis before we understand the processes that led to flourish. The Portuguese State (one of the hardest hit by it ) tried to elaborate means to face it , and a major , was interfering with the African slave trade , whose law tonnages of 1684 was crucial for this ( the tip of the ice berg ) . This is our thesis . We analyze these issues with the proposal that the studies of the " Colonial Brazil " must be made within the context of the Portuguese colonial empire and not just within the scope circumscribed Brazil - slave trade - Portugal . A second very important point to be discussed relates to humanitarian ways in which historiography conceived the enactment of the law of tonnage. We seek to reinterpret this issue by launching a new methodology to deal with the laws pertaining to the slave trade in the period : that men of that time had not itself human feelings towards slaves , but before doing so worried about the economic value they built the as the main labor- colonial work.
