Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of the existence of a prison in small towns, especially in Valparaiso-SP, trying to understand some possible contradictions about the meaning of that wall in the lives of people who live outside the walls: such as the growth in the local economy (trade and services) and/or rising crime, prejudice and fear. Where there's penitentiary, people isolate themselves more? Does the spatial organization of the city reflect the order or the logic of the prison? Does everyone become prisoners in some way? Reflecting on those meanings (social, economic and criminal), starting with the review on the history of imprisonment and its evolution by studying a specific geographic area for analysis since the effects of urbanization on social living of its inhabitants with a jail according with different segments (the general public, traders, officials of the prison system operators, security etc.). Finally, we are going to compare the relationship among the perception of space, fear of crime and criminal with the crime dynamic (notified) and the reflections on the spatial organization of a small town. So, we will reconsider the effects of some local public security policies, but also expand reflections for other urban areas that experience the same problem. As a result, we expect to understand more the sociability that intertwine with the problem and contribute, even modestly, with a more humane and less violence society. (AU)
