Abstract

The present work is dedicated to analyze the way in which Víctor Jara, Quilapayún and Inti-Illimani - musicians linked to the Chilean New Song Movement - sought to "take history into their hands", putting themselves next to the "people" in achieving what they considered to be their becoming. Claiming protagonism in the transformation of the social order and elaborating speeches on the social role of art, such musicians sought to affiliate their repertoire to a particular musical tradition, reinventing it. In opposition to what they considered a static view of folklore, they defended its dynamic character, which would allow its transformation and update according to the political demands of the present. Affiliated to the Communist Party, they offered support to Salvador Allende during the electoral campaign of 1970, and later became part of his government, contributing to the identification of Chilean New Song - a term coined in the homonymous festival held in 1969 - as a movement politically engaged. In order to understand how this movement participated in the intense process of social transformations that occurred in Chile between the second half of the 1960s and early 1970s, we examinated the universe of aesthetic, political and historical references present in the selected artists' LPs - spanning from their first recordings (1966) to the military coup (1973) -, focusing on the relationship between popular music and revolutionary ideals.
