Abstract

There is a growing interest in identifying markers of risk for cardiovascular events in HIV/AIDS infected patients. Treatment with antiretroviral therapy (ART) may lead to changes in lipid profile. Epidemiological studies suggest that flavonoids in cocoa and "mate" tea improve cardiovascular function due to its antioxidant properties. Evaluate the impact of ingestion of chocolate and "mate" tea on the lipid profile in individuals with HIV/AIDS. Randomized, placebo-controlled, single-blind crossover trial of 180 volunteer's HIV patients, ages from 19 to 59 years, attending an HIV/AIDS clinic, and in ART treatment for at least six months. Individuals will be supplemented for 45 days (of which there will be a washout of 15 days after baseline and every two weeks of intervention) with 65g of chocolate bar containing 36g cocoa and with 300mL of "mate" tea. Anthropometric, immunologic, dietary intake, lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL-C, non-HDL-C, LDL-C, VLDL, triglycerides, indices Castelli I and II), apolipoproteins A1 and B, auto -antibodies against oxLDL and phenolic compounds. Based on the collected data, we will establish values for mean, median, standard deviation and minimum and maximum values for the variables investigated. Chi-square test will be used for categorical variables. ANOVA will be used to assess mean differences in responses between intra-individual treatments on the variables of interest and the Student-t test will compare mean baseline values of all variables, before and after supplementation. Student t-test and ANOVA will be applied for variables with normal distribution, while non-parametric Mann-Whitney and Kruskal Wallis will be used for non-normal distribution variables. The level of significance will be p<0.05. (AU)
