Abstract

The intense industrialization and urbanization lead to multiple environmental problems, among them, the decrease of water resources quality and the increase of number and heterogeneity from human activities waste. Despite the population's awareness about valuation of municipal solid waste (MSW) and its treatment techniques, Brazil still has difficulties to manage them, so that the most frequent way of final disposal is the direct deposition on the ground due to the low costs and the wide availability of areas for its implementation. In this context, it was found that the main environmental impact of the MSW is the risk of the surface and underground water contamination. Given this issue, came the motivation for an investigative research on the mechanisms involved in this kind of contamination, proposing an in situ monitoring of hydraulic and hydrogeochemical characteristics of the unsaturated zone of an abandoned waste dump of São Carlos/SP, located on a recharge area of Guarani Aquifer System. Further aims are to confront the results obtained in the field with those generated in the simulation of pollutant transport by Hydrus-1D. The expected results should support projects for remediation of contaminated areas, contribute to progress in integrated management of waste, including to make possible new proposals for final disposal according to local conditions and support the actions for the water resources protection, especially groundwater.
