Abstract The Bignoniaceae family includes 840 species and 81 genera and has been the focus of many phylogenetic studies based on molecular characters. Bignonieae, the largest tribe of Bignoniaceae, is mainly composed of neotropical lianas with leaflets modified into tendrils. The genus Bignonia L., which is placed in Bignonieae, currently includes 28 species placed in eight different genera: Clytostoma Miers ex Bureau, Cydista Bureau, Macranthisiphon Bureau ex K. Schum., Mussatia Bureau ex Baill., Phryganocydia Mart. ex Bureau, Potamoganus Sandwith, Roentgenia Urb, Saritaea Dugand, e Tanaecium Sw. This project aims to: (1) produce a monograph for Bignonia; (2) reconstruct the its phylogeny based on molecular characters; and (3) use the phylogeny of Bignonia on a biogeographical study. The wide distribution of the genus associated to the high diversity in reproductive characters turns Bignonia into a particularly interesting group for studies focused on processes related to diversification of tropical plants. | |
