Abstract In Brazil several Asteraceae species, both native and exotic, are well known by the population for its medicinal properties. One of these species is Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray, known popularly as margaridão, a plant native to Central America and Mexico, acclimatized to Brazil, which has become common in gardens and flowerbeds, and even considered as an invasive plant. It is popularly used as anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, antimicrobial among other uses, and the extracts of this plant have shown many of these activities in different studies, highlighting the anti-inflammatory action of its leaves. Recent studies, including some made in FCFRP-USP, demonstrated that the major classes of substances present in T. diversifolia related to anti-inflammatory action are the sesquiterpene lactones, chlorogenic acids and flavonoids, and some of these components have been identified and isolated. Because the great potential of T.diversifolia as a raw material for the development of a new product (phytomedicine or natural drug), it becomes interesting to study the effects of seasonality on their markers in order to understand how they behave in the plant throughout the year, which is proposed this project. For this study phytochemical analytical methods will be employed (HPLC-DAD, LC-ESI/MS and spectrophotometry UV/vis) and bioassays of pharmacological activity in vitro and in vivo, in order to observe the qualitative and quantitative variation of the main markers from margaridão, correlating the pharmacological activity of its extracts, and thus establish the behavior of the most important secondary metabolites in the pharmacological action.
