Abstract

For decades, biologists around the world have recorded animal sounds. As the number of records grows, so does the difficulty to manage them, presenting challenges to save, retrieve, share and manage the sounds. These challenges are complicated by the fact that animal sound recordings have specific peculiarities, associated to the context which the sound was recorded (e.g., sounds emitted by grouped individuals may be different from isolated individuals). These details may be relevant to biologists but not always they are explicit in the sound record metadata.The goal of this thesis is to develop research in the domain of animal sound retrieval, considering specific peculiarities (e.g., territorial context vs. reproductive context) that currently are impossible of being considered in algorithms of sound retrieval based only on acoustic similarity. This work will provide a web system to retrieve animal sounds based on semantic similarity and context analysis, using ontologies linked with sound record metadata. Expected contributions are both theoretical (new algorithms of query processing) and practical (the system that will be provided).The student is enrolled in the doctoral at UNICAMP, started on August, 2010. This work will be part of a multidisciplinary project that involves researchers from the Institutes of Computing and Biology at UNICAMP, coordinated by the proponent coordinator.
