Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is one of the main chronic diseases in childhood. It requires specificities in its control and, it can be associated with other autoimmune disorders. Due to a genetic susceptibility, children with T1DM are more prone to develop Celiac Disease (CD), an autoimmune enterophaty characterized by intolerance to gluten. The diagnosis of Celiac Disease is difficult in patients with T1DM, because it can be asymptomatic. Since there are no reports of national and international studies emphasizing the experience of the child with diabetes when she/he receives the diagnosis of CD, the objective of this study is to understand the experience lived by the child with T1DM when with these two chronic diseases. We will use Content Analysis as methodological framework. The present research project will study children ranging 9 to 11 years of age, with a T1DM diagnosis for at least one year and CD under treatment, regardless of the time of diagnosis. Data will be collected in pediatric endocrinology clinics and in a type 1 diabetes Association, after the approval of the respective Ethics Committees, through semi-structured audio-recorded interviews. The data analysis will follow the principles of Content Analysis.
