Abstract

The central goal of this project is to treat textiles and clothing's transformations in New World during the years 1580 to 1640 from gender perspective. This conjuncture was marked by the Iberian Union and the rise of powers of the Netherlands and France. In that moment, Portuguese, Flemish, Venetian and Genovese merchants crossed the Atlantic and trend cotton, silk and taffeta textiles for the new lands inhabitants. Also, note the presence of women's role in production, circulation and consumption textile and clothing, as well as in differences of dress and gender distinctions in Portuguese America and Indies of Castile. For the analyses of the theme were delimited primary sources, like the Royal laws, such as "Ordenações Filipinas", Jesuits letters, correspondence of governors, settlers report to XVI and XVII centuries and inquisitorial process. With the aim of expanding the research's field, the historiography debate about gender, Women's History, Textile, Clothing and metamorphosis of fashion were chosen. (AU)
